Dear friends and colleagues,
When your editors-in-chief were in their teens, MTV was ruling the world. It was a time during which MTV started to be more than just a music channel. At least one of your editors still remembers watching “Beavis and Butthead” until after midnight. One of the highlights of the day (night)! In 1992, MTV also launched a reality series, called the “The Real World” in which 7 strangers start living together in an apartment while being continuously filmed. As such, the series was one of the first reality shows and undoubtedly gave inspiration for many more reality shows. One of the features that made The Real World such a success was dealing with a variety of “real world” issues such as ‘overnight activities’ (!), religion, illness and death. Being researchers in the field of thrombosis research, we especially connect with the latter two subjects.
In this issue of Thrombosis Research, Delluc and colleagues provide us with “real world” numbers on incidence of malignancy in unselected patients with first unprovoked VTE ([
[1]
]). Studies published in the 90’s and early 2000’s showed that the one-year incidence of occult cancer following VTE was greater than 10%. In the current study, the one-year incidence of cancer diagnosed in the year following a first unprovoked VTE event was 5%, which is consistent with a decrease in the incidence of occult cancer, the reasons for which are unknown, but may be related to better screening leading to cancer diagnosis prior to incident VTE.This issue of Thrombosis Research also contains two reviews that are certainly worth reading. The first review, by Nowak-Göttl, discuss the pro’s and con’s of testing for thrombophilia in children ([
[2]
]). In the second review, Jung and colleagues discuss the validity of Plasminogen Activator 1 Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) as a mediator and therapeutic target in vascular disease ([[3]
]).By the way, the 32nd season of “The Real World” was subtitled “Bad blood”. Fitting, isn’t it?
